In Hercules' Second Labour he uses brute strength and strategy in order to defeat the Hydra: a many-headed water-snake at the entrance to the underworld. His usually trusted weapon, the club, proves to be of no use to him. Every head he cuts off, two more come up in its place. With the help of his cousin, Iolaus, he manages to defeat the Hydra and bury the eternal head. Before leaving the scene he dips his arrows in the monster's blood, a choice that would have unintended, disastrous consequences; one of which being the wounding of his friend and mentor, Chiron.
Today, Chiron and the North Node are conjunct at 17° Aries. With this symbol as our guide, and with the help of the mythic entanglement of Hercules and Chiron, we will seek to shed light on the sacred wound at the heart of the masculine principle. What are the limits of the archetypal hero? And if we were to get the Hero in touch with a wise mentor, is it possible for these two archetypes to find redemption within the mutual witnessing of the wound?
